The Bible is Not About You!

I first watched this video from Tim Keller this past Sunday at my church as a sort of introduction to our new series on “Reading the Bible for Life”. The video is great. How you view the Bible and what it is primarily about will ultimately shape your conception of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Egyptian Freedom and True Freedom

The past few weeks have been remarkable in the Middle East. My family has no television at home, so when we took a short family trip to the Wisconsin Dells recently, my wife and I found ourselves transfixed by CNN’s reporting in Egypt. We were watching on the edges of our seat, certain that we were witnessing history as a people stood up to their brutal dictator and demanded he step down, demanded freedom. With bated breath, we watched the development of the protests in Cairo’s Tahrir Square. A week later, the protestors succeeded in forcing their president to step down. Demonstrators gathered, chanting, “Egypt is free! Egypt is free!” Continue reading

The Bible: Not Just an Instruction Manual

If I were to ask several different Christians the question, “What is the Bible,” I am likely to receive several different answers. One particular answer I have heard often of late and has gotten me thinking is that the Bible is God’s instruction book for us. On the face of it, I cannot totally disagree. Scripture certainly does contain a wealth of knowledge and wisdom pertaining to our lives and happiness. 2Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” Teaching, reproof, correction, and training certainly fit into the idea of an instruction book. However, I am convinced this simplified explanation sells short, misses the mark, and grossly distorts what the Bible is. Continue reading
